About The School
The Jay’s School of Dance was started 23 years ago by Jeannette and her husband John. They began by teaching Ballroom, Old Time, Modern Sequence and Latin American to adults. The classes grew so much that Jeannette and John soon started running classes for children.
With the success of their other classes, Jeannette and John also started teaching Disco Freestyle and Rock n Roll. Jeannette and John soon developed their work further with their pupils by entering them for examinations and competitions, firstly in Old Time and then in Latin, Ballroom and Disco.
Jeannette and John joined the Super League dance competitions with Bob Barber from the Western’s School of Dance. This comprised of couples doing their own routines but as part of a team. Each couple was judged on their performance and the points were put together for the teams totals. A number of these competitions were won by the Jays School until they stopped taking part in these competitions in 2002.
The pupils then focussed on Open Competitions, School Competitions and Medallist Competitions. They also continued to work through the examination grades.
Over the years, the pupils have gone on to win many finals at competitions, we have had pupils go to Stage Schools, Performing Arts Colleges and perform at the Latin and Ballroom Championship Finals at Blackpool. Some of our pupils have represented England and competed abroad. One of our pupils in particular was also the England Team Captain.
Other pupils have gone on to teach dance (Jemma, Kristy, April, Jason and Lauren for example), perform locally and some of our older pupils have even gone on to audition for the BBC Television Show ‘Strictly Dance Fever.’ Two pupils got as far as the final rounds before the last ten couples were chosen.
